"The Laptop That Changed Everything"
Suresh was a boy unlike most others in his small, bustling town. While other kids played cricket in the streets, climbed trees, or cycled furiously through the narrow lanes, Suresh had a different favorite activity—doing absolutely nothing.
He was the very definition of laziness. His day started late in the morning and often stretched lazily into the afternoon. When he wasn’t sleeping, Suresh could usually be found sprawled on the old, creaky sofa in the living room, either scrolling through channels on the TV or, more often, playing video games. His fingers were nimble on the controller, but that was the only part of him that moved with any enthusiasm.
His parents were worried. “He’s wasting his life,” his mother would often say to his father as she looked at Suresh snoozing on the sofa after yet another late-night gaming marathon.
“Maybe he just needs some direction,” his father, Mr. Ramachandran, would reply thoughtfully. He had always believed that every child had potential; they just needed the right spark to ignite it.
One day, after much thought, Mr. Ramachandran came home with a surprise for Suresh. It was a sleek new laptop.
“What’s this for?” Suresh asked lazily, barely lifting his head from the sofa.
“It’s for you,” his father said. “I thought it might interest you. You can learn new things, play games, watch videos—whatever you want. But it’s time you start doing something more productive with your time.”
Suresh took the laptop with mild curiosity. He wasn’t particularly excited. After all, why bother with a laptop when he had his beloved video games? But that evening, after his usual gaming session, he opened the laptop and stared at the blank screen. He realized something—he didn’t know how to use it.
He fumbled around, clicking aimlessly, opening and closing tabs without understanding much. Frustrated, he shut it down and went back to his games. But something had shifted. The next day, and the day after that, he found himself returning to the laptop, trying to figure out how it worked. Bit by bit, his curiosity grew.
One afternoon, he accidentally opened a typing tutorial that had been pre-installed. The screen displayed a cheerful-looking cartoon character encouraging him to type simple words like ‘cat’ and ‘dog.’ Amused, Suresh gave it a try. At first, his fingers moved clumsily over the keyboard, and he made a lot of mistakes. But instead of giving up, he felt a strange sense of challenge. He wanted to get it right.
Day by day, Suresh began spending more time on the typing tutorial. His fingers, once accustomed only to video game controllers, started to grow faster and more precise on the keyboard. As his typing improved, he began exploring other things on the laptop—educational videos, online puzzles, and even basic coding tutorials. He was surprised to find that he enjoyed learning new things.
His parents watched the transformation with cautious optimism. Suresh was still the same boy who loved lounging on the sofa, but now there was a new spark in his eyes, a curiosity that hadn’t been there before.
One evening, Mr. Ramachandran sat down with Suresh and asked, “So, how’s the laptop?”
“It’s cool,” Suresh said with a shrug, but there was a hint of excitement in his voice. “I’ve been learning how to type. I can do 30 words per minute now.”
“That’s impressive!” his father said, genuinely pleased. “What else have you been learning?”
Suresh hesitated for a moment and then said, “I found this website that teaches coding. It’s kind of fun. I made a simple game yesterday. It’s nothing fancy, but it works.”
Mr. Ramachandran’s eyes widened. “That’s amazing, Suresh! You see? When you put your mind to something, you can achieve great things.”
As weeks turned into months, Suresh’s interest in technology deepened. He started taking online courses in web development, graphic design, and app creation. He created small projects and showed them proudly to his parents. The boy who had once been known for doing nothing was now spending hours each day learning and creating.
His newfound passion also had another unexpected effect—he became more active in other areas of his life. He started waking up earlier, going for morning walks, and even helping his mother with household chores. The laziness that had once defined him seemed to be melting away.
By the time Suresh finished high school, he had already built a portfolio of projects that showcased his skills in web development and app design. He applied to a prestigious technology institute and was accepted with a scholarship. His parents couldn’t have been prouder.
Years later, Suresh became a successful software developer, known for his innovative apps and creative solutions. He often gave talks at schools and colleges, sharing his journey and encouraging other young people to discover their potential.
“I used to think I was just lazy,” he would say with a smile. “But I wasn’t lazy—I just hadn’t found something that excited me. Once I did, everything changed.”
Suresh’s story became an inspiration in his town, a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a little curiosity and the right opportunity to turn things around. And as for the old sofa where he had spent so many hours doing nothing—it still sat in the living room, a quiet witness to the incredible journey of a boy who discovered the joy of doing something.
Moral - We shouldn't become lazy.
